The political impasse between the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike and the Rivers state governor Siminalayi Fubara has reached a feverish crescendo on Monday as it escalated in action and dimension. The long feud between a political son and his political godfather has thrown River State into turmoil since last year which attracted the attention of President Tinubu who called them to order in a meeting he summoned to Aso Rock to find solution to their differences.
The President’s intervention only secured a temporary respite as the hostilities started shortly after. Sequel to last Saturday’s local government election, Fubara, the PDP governor, directed his loyalists to contest under is proxy party, the Action People’s Party (APP) when it was apparent Wike has hijacked all PDP structures in the state. The relatively unknown APP swept the local government poll on Saturday leaving only one local government for the APC out of 23 local government Councils in the State. The election it was said, was marred by irregularities, fraud, rigging and falsification of results. It goes without saying that the process was a recipe for violence as about 3 local government Secretariats had been allegedly set ablaze as at the time of filing this report.
The development in Rivers has caught the attention of the Presidency who issued a statement quoting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as appealing to both sides to eschew violence and explore the path of the rule of law through the courts to resolve the issue.
